A Concrete Monologue
Some images from the edge...taken at Purteen Harbour, Achill. I like the tension between existing rock and the poured concrete in these photographs. What better way to mediate between a wild sea and a rugged terrain?
These images were photographed on a Practika BC1 35mm camera and developed by hand on Ilford Multigrade IV Pearl Paper.

The narratives explore concealed/buried/forgotten aspects of the island that have informed its cultural development. The subtexts are analogous to tectonic fault-lines in the landscape. A shift in plate movement and they are exposed on the surface for all to see. The image above sets out the structure of the written thesis while visually mapping my ideas and discoveries...

Context•Subtext
"landscapes come to stand as symbols of continuity, the product of land worked over and produced, etched with the past so that history runs through geography..."
(edensor, 2003)
the physical landscape of keem bay in achill is sliced open to reveal a series of collaged narratives i.e. subtexts. these contain fragments of songs, stories and images from the island's recent and distant past.
By acknowledging the cultural topography of a place the model attempts to show that a study of the physical terrain alone is not enough...
