Engaging the Subtext



1Context; the circumstances relevant to an event or fact; the words before and after a word or passage in a piece of writing that contribute to its meaning.


2Subtext;an underlying theme in a piece of writing; a message which is not stated directly but can be inferred 


This image consists of six sections taken through Keem Bay, Achill with a narratives collaged into each. The narratives explore concealed/buried/forgotten aspects of the island that have informed its cultural development. The subtexts are analogous to tectonic fault-lines in the landscape. A shift in plate movement and they are exposed on the surface for all to see. The image above sets out the structure of the written thesis while visually mapping my ideas and discoveries...
